Moving out on my own checklist2/12/2024 ![]() There’s no harder-hitting time than when our parents fall ill and need our support. So, if you have a full-time, well-paying job, there’s really nothing keeping you at your family home. When people continue to live with their parents well into adulthood, it’s usually because they can’t afford their place. Either way, these are the signs that will tell you all you need to hear to start packing. Or maybe you do but you just need a kick up the rear-end to get you going. Maybe you know that you need to move out. Signs it might be time to move out on your own We have all the information to make this new, exciting *and scary* time in your life easier. If you know that your time to spread your wings has come, but you don’t actually know what to do, don’t worry. But just because it’s something that everyone has to do doesn’t mean it’s easy. Eventually, we all have to move out of our parent’s house. We know that’s such a cliché, but it’s true. There comes a time when every baby bird has to leave the nest. Change your address on everything important Keep all your receipts for the first couple of months Expect the first month to be the most expensive Do you know how much it costs to live alone? Get plenty of rest, you need to be sharp for the next day. Check and double-check everything is in place and you're not missing a thing. Take one last walk around the house and reminisce. The day before might be the hardest of them all. ![]() Donate everything that won't make it to your new home: food, clothes, medicine, old computers, anything!.A few changes of clothes, your phone charger, medicine, and anything else you might need until you're in your new home unpacking. Do it as if you'd be going out on a holiday. You should pack a small bag for yourself and any family members in your household.Take pictures of electronic stuff, such as computers, TVs, etc. Now it's time to pack everything that you have.If you have anything important in your hard drive (anything from family pictures to work stuff), make sure you back it up somewhere.If you own any pets, check out our guide to moving with pets!.Leave out only what you need for the next 14 days. It might seem like too much, but you don't want to be left hanging on the day you move out! Call the moving or truck rental company and confirm for a third and final time.You're starting to feel like a stranger in the house you’re in now, but don’t worry, you'll soon be there. You don't want to be scrambling for your ID the day before you move out! Place all essential documents - such as medical records, passports, and similar items - in one place.Call your home insurance, cable, electric, and all other utility providers to prepare them to switch their services to your new home.Double-check with both your landlord, your moving company, or whichever friends you asked to help you on the big day.Wrap your books, season-specific clothing, and everything you won’t likely need within the next month. Don't box your computer just yet, though! At this stage, focus on packing non-essential items. Start collecting boxes, bubble wrap, and old newspapers to start packing! No rush, though! You have 30 days!Įverything is going smoothly, but now comes the physical exercise. If you're renting your current house, think about potential repairs and make sure you do it before you move onto the next stage.Google moving or truck rental companies in your area and call them as well. Call your workplace and ask for time off in advance.Figure out what you're going to keep and think about donating everything that you won't bring with you to your new home. ![]() Walk around the house and do an inventory.No worries, there's not too much to do right now! This step is all about planning. It all starts one month before the big day! 1.
